Build an Author Platform and They Will Come OR How a "Field of Dreams" strategy MAY NOT WORK WELL

Let's examine a few issues here about Character vice Author branding shall we?

1. Usual YAF novel or romance classic has between 40 and 80 thousand words, many related to main character right?

2. Author's Bio has maybe 200 words and Bibliography another 100 or so.

SO why in the world would a well meaning Ebook Parent(Author) spend months and Years giving birth to their EbookChild AND NOT do everything that is possible to magnify and illuminate that character.

Beware the purveyors of the Author Branditis syndrome.

Trust Your Instincts and let the character have center stage. Here are a few ideas to get started on this aspect.

Oh and btw we will coach and advise Socially Responsible Authors and Self Publishers on how this works out and extends.

A. Let's start at the beginning. Most writers have a story concept or dream, and in many cases, find a main character and others to present the story and effect dialogue. Most fictional treatments which are highly readable share strong character development, and this narrative makes it worth a good long read. 

Now, the new idea is that an author, who pours themselves into this character, and to an extent, becomes that character, deserves to bring that character forward in the marketing.

So, with that we suggest the following:

Set up a charactername@gmail.com account. This will be needed for the Google+ Hangouts where fans can 'meet' the character and author.Set up a google hangout schedule of 'appearances' for that character. We recommend 2x a month on a alternating schedule.

Set up a Facebook fan page for the character.Set up a Youtube account(using gmail from above) for readings and trailers for book.

As You can see, we highly suggest the use of social media technologies and scrap the notion of an author page or platform, since the only place the author's name appears is in very front of book and in bio. 

By allowing the character's name and personality to shine among the social networks, a following will evolve and nourish the ebook activity and also open the community for sequels.

Pebbles in the Pond vice BS(Big Splash) Marketing for an EbookChild

Imagine that the online market for ebooks and books is like a small body of water, e.g. pond, and You are standing on the shore waiting to release Your EbookChild into that dark and forboding water. Which technique will make the most 'ripples'? 

 A. Prevailing notions seem to suggest that Big Splash marketing(aka BS) with a full on cross media, branding author platform approach(did I get enough buzzwords in that phrase) is required. Has some merit, yet like when we were kids in summer, too many cannonballing jumps at one time can empty the pool of water. 

 B. Pebbles in the Pond is a technique much like it sounds. In Your hand is a collection of various pebbles and Yes, when cast into the water, makes an interlocking and overlapping pattern. Imagine how that would work when Your Ebook is doing same thing. Gentle and pervasive effects in communities who will admire the pattern, share the story, and perhaps gift an ebook to a friend in their world. The choice is Yours.

Guerilla vice Gorilla Ebook Channel Marketing or Time for A Mea Culpa or 2

Biggest illlusion on the Ebook Channel Marketing scene is that "More is More" a la big box data warehouses like Amazon et. al. And, I still, at times, suffer from BS(Big Splash) marketing syndrome. So here is my 'warts and all' admission that not all great big ideas work do they?

We started a channel marketing Mapping project for 'Buy Local' Indie Store ebook placements(http://bit.ly/PlaceYourEbookChild2013) and thought we would get clever by adding a link to our clients'(www.sophiasirius.net) offering through a select series of International Airport Bookstores online from WH Smith.

Well today, when checking on map accuracy, lo and behold, WH Smith changed(and imagine did not tell anyone they were doing  such an onerous thing...wink..wink) the way that Kobo Ebooks are searched for through their system. Lessons learned:

Beware the weight of an online elephant, as there is a good chance that Your EbookChild will get squashed.

Never(never) assume that Your ebook is visible online unless You are willing to check on that weekly.

Stay focused on community based online speciality bookstores, and stay clear of the huge data warehouse approaches.

How to Re Light a Fire For Your EbookChild when the Kindling Dies in the Amazon Jungle

Readers of this blog can most likely figure out I am no fan of the data mining operation that Amazon is running on the good intentions of the Indie Author community. If there were ever a case of 'caveat emptor'(let the buyer be wary) then it is the Free KDP episodes which are intended to seed that broader market with no charge reading material. A few issues with that strategy:

1st According to my long time Asian business associates, there is an expression that is used to save face there. "FREE is more expensive" and have experienced that in many countries. A gift is just that, a gift, present NOT to be construed as an offering that leads to a purchase.

2nd The Power of Word of Mouth marketing is long respected, YET the policies at Kindleville preclude even a simple community based borrowing approach. Gotta wonder.

3rd The absence of niche or focus market ability for the Free Kindle project, means this is an example of Big Splash(BS) technique which makes a large and short term ripple in the marketplace.

So that being said, we offer, through this blog a few tips and techniques in Niche Marketing Your EbookChild, based NOT on wild theories about social networks, but drawn instead, from actual campaigns, where we reveal, warts and all, the steps we attempt and the ZERO hype results.
